Kenneth Musgrave's Research Group

[Dr William Kenneth Rogerson Musgrave took up a lectureship in organic chemistry at Durham in 1945. Receiving a D.Sc. from Birmingham University in 1956, he became senior lecturer in 1957 and professor in 1960. He chaired the Board of Studies in Chemistry for three years (starting on October 1) from 1968, and then from 1974-7. Musgrave's final year of chairmanship began in 1980 History. Retiring in 1981, Musgrave lived at Durham until later in the decade and then in Cheshire, where he died in 2010 on November 13, aged 92 eulogy. Eric Banks, who joined the group in 1953, includes a lively account of organofluorine research at Durham (1953-1956) in his contribution to the collection of review articles Fluorine chemistry at the millennium: fascinated by fluorine, compiled by R.E. Banks (Elsevier, 2000), chapter 32, pages 574-624.]

1. Ken Musgrave collaborated with Dr Peter (Charles) Joscelyn, a colleague employed part-time from 1953 to 1955 who was the nominal supervisor of research by Alan Queen, (see 1954 above; obituary). Joscelyn moved to a position in the Department of Clinical Chemistry at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

2. From 1961, different supervisory arrangements applied to all in the group; see details in the rubric for Dick Chambers' Research Group.

In 2008 (March 28-30), an alumni-driven reunion at Durham of members of the Department from the years 1953-76 celebrated the 90th years of Geoffrey Edward Coates (born 1917, May 14) and William Kenneth Rogerson Musgrave (born 1918, November 13).
