Dear friends/colleagues,

As many of you will know, we have been discussing appropriate ways in which to remember Ken Wade and mark his numerous contributions to Durham Chemistry.

We would like to set up a new prize in the Department for PhD students. This would be called the “Ken Wade Thesis Prize” and would be awarded to the best PhD thesis submitted in a given year based on comments from external examiners and assessment by a cross-sectional group of academics in the Department. This would both celebrate the excellent research performed by our students and help their future careers. We’ll present the award as part of the annual graduation celebrations.

Ken’s family are happy for us to name the prize in this way, and we hope it’s something Ken would have appreciated!

Several people have asked if they could contribute to the prize fund in Ken’s memory. If you would like to contribute there are several ways of doing so (listed below). The Science Faculty will financially match the annual prize we award.

Our library of articles about Ken is at:

Please contact myself or Andrew Unwin ( if you’d like more information.

With best wishes,
